The sound of whistles and shouts on a school rugby field in Gqeberha turned to stunned silence on Thursday. In a tragic incident witnessed by his teammates, 17-year-old Westering High pupil Kungawoo Booi was injured during practice and died shortly after, despite immediate medical attention.

The specifics of the injury have not been disclosed, but the impact has shattered the school community. Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that Kabega Park police are investigating and have opened an inquest docket to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

“Absolutely Heartbroken”: A School Grapples with Grief

Westering High principal Hugo Muller expressed the profound shock and sorrow rippling through the school. “Our school community is absolutely heartbroken,” Muller said on Friday. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the staff of the school.”

Recognising the trauma for those who witnessed the incident, the school has mobilised support. Muller confirmed that counselling would be provided for the affected pupils and staff, a crucial step in helping a young community process an unimaginable loss.

The Unanswered Questions and the Path Ahead

As police continue their preliminary investigation, the school and the Booi family are left to grapple with a sudden, devastating void. Principal Muller stated he planned to meet with Kungawoo’s family on Friday, a meeting undoubtedly filled with shared grief and a search for solace.

While the details of the accident remain unclear, the tragedy is a sobering reminder of the inherent physical risks in contact sports, even in a controlled practice environment. It casts a pall over the school and the wider sporting community, turning a place of camaraderie and competition into one of mourning.

For now, the focus in Gqeberha is on supporting a grieving family and a traumatised student body, as they attempt to make sense of a life ended far too soon on the field where he played.
