Knock at the Door Ends in Tragedy: Young Gqeberha Woman Shot Dead at Home
A Quiet Evening Turns Deadly
What should have been an ordinary Saturday night ended in devastating violence for a family in KwaDwesi, Gqeberha. Moments after arriving home with her boyfriend, 29-year-old Ntombizodwa Mhletywa was shot dead after answering a knock at the door.
The suddenness of the attack has left the community shaken, another life cut short in a city already grappling with persistent violent crime.
Shot While Answering the Door
According to police, the incident unfolded just after 6.30pm in Mbinza Street. Ntombizodwa and her boyfriend had recently returned home when a knock was heard at the security gate.
Her boyfriend told police he was in the bathroom at the time. Moments later, he heard three gunshots. When he rushed to see what had happened, he found Ntombizodwa lying dead, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that officers were called to the scene shortly after the shooting.
No Suspect, No Motive, Yet
At this stage, police have opened a murder case, but key questions remain unanswered. The motive for the killing is unknown, and no suspect has been identified.
Investigators are working to piece together what led to the fatal shooting and whether Ntombizodwa was the intended target or a victim of circumstances still unclear.
A Community Living With Fear
KwaDwesi, like many parts of Gqeberha, has seen its share of violent incidents over the years. Residents often speak of living on edge, especially after dark, where even routine moments, answering a door, returning home can carry unexpected danger.
On social media, news of Ntombizodwa’s death prompted an outpouring of grief and anger, with users questioning how such brazen violence continues to claim young lives in residential areas.
Another Reminder of a Bigger Crisis
Ntombizodwa’s death adds to a growing list of women killed in their own homes across South Africa, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence and safety at household level.
As police continue their investigation, her family and community are left searching for answers and justice, in a tragedy that unfolded in seconds but will echo far longer.
Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to come forward.
