A quiet Sunday in Boksburg turned into a scene of flames and sirens when three Greyhound buses and a trailer were set alight at the company’s depot in Jet Park. The incident has left commuters shaken and sparked questions about safety in one of South Africa’s most trusted long-distance travel brands.

Fire Contained, No Injuries Reported

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson Eric Maloka confirmed that firefighters managed to stop the blaze from spreading further. Two buses were quickly driven out of danger, limiting the damage. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the charred remains of the vehicles tell a story of destruction that has unsettled both staff and loyal Greyhound passengers.

A Blow to South Africa’s Travel Icon

For many South Africans, Greyhound is more than just a bus service. It represents affordability, reliability, and the memory of countless long-distance trips connecting Johannesburg to Durban, Cape Town, and beyond. Seeing its buses reduced to ashes hits home for thousands who depend on the brand for safe, budget-friendly travel.

The company, which has weathered financial storms and even briefly shut down operations in 2021, has been trying to regain stability in a tough economy. The fire feels like another hurdle at a time when public transport options are already stretched thin.

What Comes Next

At this stage, officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Whether it was mechanical, accidental, or deliberate is still unclear. What is clear, however, is that the incident will add pressure on Greyhound at a time when South Africa’s public transport system is already struggling to meet demand.

For now, commuters are urged to keep an eye on Greyhound’s official communication channels for updates on any disruptions.
