Hammanskraal Horror: Man Denied Bail After Allegedly Killing Family with Spade

A quiet community near Hammanskraal was left reeling after a man allegedly unleashed a terrifying spade attack, leaving three family members dead and two others injured.

Romeo Shibambu, 37, appeared before Temba Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where his bail application was denied. He is expected back in court on 27 November.

A Brutal Rampage

The alleged killings took place on 30 September in Suurman, a suburb that has since been gripped by shock and grief. Shibambu is accused of targeting a three-year-old toddler playing outside a neighbour’s home. Armed with a garden spade, he allegedly struck the child to death.

When the toddler’s mother ran for help, she reportedly collapsed, only to be struck down by Shibambu as well. Her husband then attempted to intervene but was also allegedly killed by the spade.

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana explained, “There were warning signs just two days prior. On 28 September, Shibambu allegedly assaulted his sister with a spade after telling her he ‘felt like fighting’ and that he ‘would win the fight.’”

Taxi Driver Targeted

After the murders, Shibambu reportedly attacked a taxi driver who tried to stop him. According to Mahanjana, Shibambu dragged the injured driver into the taxi and drove until he could go no further. Community members eventually managed to restrain him until police arrived. The taxi driver survived and was hospitalized.

Court Denies Bail

During the bail hearing, Shibambu chose to represent himself. The court, however, deemed him a significant risk to both himself and the community. Prosecutors noted that he allegedly expressed suicidal intentions, saying his “job was done.”

He now faces three counts of murder, two of attempted murder, and one of malicious damage to property.

Community Reaction

Residents described the events as a nightmare. Social media posts show an outpouring of grief and anger, with locals urging authorities to ensure the accused remains behind bars. The community has called for increased mental health awareness and support to prevent similar tragedies.

A Chilling Reminder

This case has reignited discussions around warning signs of violent behaviour and the importance of early intervention. Experts note that repeated threats or assaults, even within families, should never be ignored a lesson painfully underscored in Hammanskraal.
