Deadly Inanda Shootout: Five Suspects Killed in KwaZulu-Natal Police Operation
Five wanted men killed in Inanda shootout
Early Thursday morning, a tense standoff in Inanda, north of Durban, ended with five men shot dead by police during an operation targeting suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda told reporters that the suspects had been on the run for months and had previously fired at police in late November 2025, making them a priority for law enforcement.
“These are suspects that police were looking for, for quite some time,” Netshiunda said. “Police acted on intelligence that they were hiding in a house in Area 5, Bester, Inanda. When officers announced their presence, the suspects opened fire. The police were left with no choice but to return fire to protect themselves and others around the house.”
During the operation, five suspects were fatally wounded, and authorities recovered four firearms before completing a thorough search of the property. No officers were injured during the “dangerous” engagement.

Part of a larger crackdown on violent crime
The Inanda operation is part of an intensified effort by KwaZulu-Natal police to curb violent crime in the region. Inanda has long been one of the province’s most crime-affected precincts, with residents reporting frequent armed robberies, shootings, and violent attacks.
In a separate but related incident earlier this week, two suspects linked to the shooting of four people in Ezimangweni, Inanda, were killed during a shootout in Amaoti. That incident left two people dead and one injured and is being investigated separately.
“These operations are ongoing and target violent offenders who pose a serious threat to communities,” Netshiunda said. “Police are committed to keeping residents safe while upholding the law.”
Community reaction and context
Residents of Inanda have expressed both relief and concern over the police actions. On social media, locals praised law enforcement for acting decisively but also raised questions about the broader root causes of violent crime, including poverty, unemployment, and access to firearms.
Inanda, historically affected by gang activity and organised crime, has seen repeated police raids in recent years, reflecting ongoing challenges for authorities trying to balance aggressive law enforcement with community trust.
What’s next?
Investigations into both the Thursday morning shootout and the Ezimangweni incident are continuing. Police are expected to interview witnesses, gather forensic evidence, and track down any associates of the deceased to prevent further violent crimes in the area.
For now, the early-hours operation sends a clear message: KwaZulu-Natal police are intensifying their fight against armed, dangerous criminals, and residents are watching closely to see if these measures will bring lasting safety to one of the province’s most troubled communities.
