Cross-examination and conflicting testimonies
The court has been hearing from a SAPS sergeant who has been on the stand for several days. Defence attorney Naidoo has been probing inconsistencies, particularly regarding what Jayden-Lee was wearing the day he disappeared.
During Wednesday’s cross-examination, Naidoo highlighted conflicting statements from Jayden’s teacher, Tiffany Meek herself, and a day shift security guard about his clothing. Naidoo asserted that Jayden-Lee was dressed in grey long pants, a white shirt, a tie, and black takkies on the morning he went missing.
However, the police sergeant testified that he could not confirm the details, as the information was second-hand, coming from various witnesses.
Police records under scrutiny
The court was presented with entries from the complex’s occurrence book (OB) for May 13 and 14, showing that Jayden-Lee’s disappearance was only formally recorded after 8 pm that day by a night shift security guard. Naidoo drew attention to missing entries, suggesting potential delays or oversights in the initial police response.
Evidence: the school bag
A significant piece of evidence under scrutiny is Jayden-Lee’s black school bag. The sergeant explained it was taken into evidence after he found schoolwork inside, dated the day Jayden disappeared. This prompted him to remove the bag from Meek’s residence and formally enter it into evidence.
What comes next
With the lawyer’s absence delaying proceedings, the cross-examination of the SAPS sergeant is set to resume on Friday. Observers and the public remain keenly interested as the case unfolds, eager for clarity and justice in this deeply tragic matter.
The delay in court proceedings adds another layer of tension to a case already heavy with emotion and complexity. The community watches closely, hoping that the truth behind Jayden-Lee’s death will be revealed, and justice duly served.
Stay tuned for further updates as the trial progresses.
