14-Year-Old’s Transplant on Hold for Three Months as Father Refuses Blood on Religious Grounds
A 14-year-old boy in Mpumalanga has been waiting for a life-saving liver transplant for three monthsbut the surgery is on hold because his father, a Jehovah’s Witness, refuses to allow a blood transfusion.
The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that doctors will be forced to conduct a transfusion without parental consent if the teenager’s condition worsens.
The Religious Objection
The father, whose name cannot be disclosed due to the sensitivity of the matter, told The Citizen that as a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, his family is not permitted to undergo blood transfusion.
The religious objection has stalled the transplant, leaving the teenager in limbo.
The Legal Framework
The health department said South African law is clear: the best interests of the child are paramount.
“Clinicians provide counselling, explore alternatives and act according to ethical and legal frameworks,” the department said.
“If parental refusal of treatment places the child at significant risk and no medically accepted alternative exists, established legal and ethical processes exist to protect the child.”
The Current Situation
The teenager continues to receive appropriate monitoring and treatment while the dispute remains unresolved.
But if his condition deteriorates, doctors will intervenewith or without parental consent.
The Ethical Dilemma
This case pits deeply held religious beliefs against the fundamental medical principle of saving a child’s life.
For the father, the transfusion is a violation of faith. For the doctors, the failure to transfuse could be a violation of their duty.
For the 14-year-old, caught in the middle, time is running out.
The Bottom Line
The law is clear: a child’s life comes first.
The doctors are ready. The transplant is prepared. The only question is whether the transfusion will happen with consentor despite its absence.
