Tragedy at JMPD Recruitment Camp: Two Trainees Lose Lives During Assessment

A recruitment camp meant to pave the way for new Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers has turned tragic. Two young men, both in their twenties, lost their lives while participating in the rigorous recruitment and assessment process at a sports facility in Roodepoort.

Two Separate Tragedies

The first incident occurred on 28 August when Marvellous Nyambi, 24, from Rabie Ridge, collapsed during physical assessments. Officials suspect heat exhaustion as a contributing factor. Nyambi was attended to immediately by paramedics and transported to a hospital in Krugersdorp, where he passed away the following day.

Days later, the second tragedy struck. Zelethu Tekete, 26, from Bramfischerville, was found unresponsive at the same training facility. Fellow trainees rushed him into the stadium, but despite the rapid intervention of emergency medical personnel and CPR, Tekete was declared dead at the scene.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla expressed the department’s grief:

“The JMPD extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of Nyambi and Tekete during this difficult time.”

Rigorous Training Takes a Toll

The recruitment process for JMPD officers is notoriously challenging, designed to ensure candidates can meet the high standards required for metropolitan policing. MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, emphasized that the 18-month training course is both physically and mentally demanding, but safeguards are in place to protect trainees.

“JMPD is cooperating fully with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into these tragic incidents,” Tshwaku said.

Fihla added that the process would continue, noting that:

“The well-being and safety of all candidates and officers remain our top priority.”

The deaths have sent shockwaves through communities in Rabie Ridge and Bramfischerville, where social media has been flooded with tributes to the young men and calls for stricter safety measures during physically intensive assessments. Many expressed concern over whether recruitment camps are adequately prepared for extreme weather conditions, particularly during the summer months in Gauteng.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise causes of death. Authorities have pledged transparency, and JMPD officials reaffirmed their commitment to trainee safety, while also stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the recruitment process.
