Heavy rains and flash floods batter Johannesburg as EMS stays on high alert

Johannesburg faced a dramatic weather showdown on Monday, as severe thunderstorms swept across the city, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and flash flooding to several neighbourhoods. While no major incidents have been reported, the city’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) remain vigilant, especially in low-lying and informal settlement areas prone to flooding.

A city under storm watch

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi reminded residents that even though overnight and early morning reports indicated no major incidents, caution is still essential. “Motorists should avoid flooded roads, maintain safe following distances, and stay away from low-lying bridges,” he said. Families in flood-prone areas are urged to monitor young children, avoid drainage channels, and steer clear of river streams.

EMS has placed all seven major city bridges under surveillance, ready to respond rapidly to any water-related emergencies. Residents can call the EMS command and control centre at 011 375 5911 for life-threatening situations. Social media has seen residents sharing photos of overflowing streets, with local hashtags trending as people warn each other to stay home or take alternative routes.

Ekurhuleni feels the impact

Meanwhile, just over the border in Ekurhuleni, severe storms left a more tangible trail of destruction in Kwanele Extension 2, Katlehong. Emergency teams reported 11 homes damaged, with roofs torn off and walls collapsing. One elderly woman sustained minor injuries but is now stable after treatment on-site.

Spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald said Disaster Management teams are still assessing the damage and coordinating relief for affected households. The storm in Ekurhuleni underscores the unpredictable and growing intensity of summer thunderstorms in the region, leaving many residents scrambling to secure property and stay safe.

Weather outlook and safety tips

With heavy rain forecasts continuing for Johannesburg and surrounding areas, authorities advise residents to stay indoors where possible, keep emergency kits handy, and remain updated on weather alerts. Flood-prone areas, including informal settlements and low-lying suburbs, remain at the highest risk.

While Johannesburg has so far escaped significant damage, the combined force of these storms across the East Rand and city streets is a stark reminder that extreme weather is becoming an increasingly common part of life in Gauteng.
