Three days. Four service centres. Thousands of homes without electricity.

If you live in parts of Johannesburg this week, now’s the time to prep those power banks and keep the kettle close. City Power has announced a wave of planned electricity outages across four major zones, from Tuesday, 29 July, to Thursday, 31 July 2025, all due to critical maintenance.

From Midrand to Randburg, affected residents should expect disruptions lasting between 8 and 9 hours, depending on the area. Here’s what’s happening and how you can stay ahead.

Tuesday: Midrand outage across four suburbs

Date: Tuesday, 29 July 2025
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Substation: Allendale Substation (Midrand)

The following suburbs will be affected:

  • Rabie Ridge Extensions 1, 2 and 3

  • Mayibuye

  • Kanana Extensions 4 and 5

  • Austin View

Residents are urged to treat all electrical points as live, as power could return at any time during this window.

Wednesday: Power off in Fleurhof and Olivedale

Date: Wednesday, 30 July 2025

Fleurhof

  • Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Substation: Fleurhof Substation

  • Centre: Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre

Olivedale, Johannesburg North, Jukskei Park

  • Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Substation: Olivedale Substation

  • Centre: Randburg Service Delivery Centre

City Power confirmed that the Fleurhof outage was communicated in advance on 27 July, but residents have raised concerns online about short notice and ongoing disruptions.

Thursday: More outages for Randburg suburbs

Date: Thursday, 31 July 2025
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Substation: Olivedale Substation
Centre: Randburg Service Delivery Centre

Suburbs affected:

  • Johannesburg North

  • Noordhang

  • Jukskei Park

This marks a second day of outages for many in the Randburg area, prompting residents to plan around back-to-back interruptions.

What’s behind these outages?

City Power says the planned interruptions are part of long-term efforts to improve Joburg’s electrical grid.

“The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network which is part of our programme of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the utility explained in a public statement.

However, public sentiment suggests a growing frustration, with Joburg locals sharing tips and concerns across social media platforms. From backup inverter advice to gate motor failures, Joburgers are finding ways to cope, but patience is wearing thin.

How to prepare if you’re affected

  • Keep devices fully charged the night before

  • Store water for kettle or geyser downtime

  • Put gate motors on manual

  • Use gas stoves or pre-cooked meals

  • Keep torches and solar lights handy

City Power reminds residents that while the supply may be restored earlier than the scheduled time, all plugs and appliances should be treated as live throughout the day.

“City Power regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption,” the utility said.
