Joburg Residents Brace for 8-Hour Planned Power Outages Across Multiple Suburbs This Week
Johannesburg Prepares for Week of Planned Power Outages
Residents across Johannesburg are set to experience a series of planned power interruptions this week as City Power ramps up essential network maintenance. From Roodepoort to Randburg and Lenasia to Reuven, the outages will last up to eight hours, with the first disruptions starting Monday, 24 November 2025.
City Power emphasizes that these interruptions are crucial to maintaining reliable electricity supply across the city, but for residents, the timing couldn’t be trickierjust as many prepare for festive season work and home projects.
Randburg and Northern Suburbs Hit Early in the Week
The first major outage will affect Bryanston and surrounding northern suburbs on Monday, 24 November. Maintenance at the Bryanston substation will cut power from 8am to 4pm, impacting multiple areas including:
-
Gleniffer and Solridge
-
Mill Hill Ext. 2
-
New Brighton and Glenadrienne
-
Country Life Park and Sandhurst Ext. 4
-
Bryanston East and West, including Ext. 1, 2, 3, 7, 12, 13, 31, 42, 44, 71
-
River Club Ext. 3 and 10
-
Parkmore and Lym Park
Later in the week, on Wednesday, 26 November, parts of Ferndale will experience outages from 9am to 5pm due to maintenance at the Randburg substation.
Roodepoort Faces Triple Disruption
Roodepoort residents will need extra planning this week, with three separate outages scheduled:
-
Tuesday, 25 November: Helderkruin Switching Station maintenance leaves Helderkruin without power from 8am to 4pm.
-
Thursday, 27 November: Two simultaneous outages occur:
-
Timber Street Switching Station: affects Manufacta and Roodepoort West
-
Paul Kruger Avenue Switching Station: affects Roodepoort North and Horizon
Both Thursday interruptions run from 8am to 4pm.
-
Southern Areas and Lenasia Impacted at Week’s End
City Power has also scheduled outages for southern Johannesburg:
-
Saturday, 29 November: Reuven service delivery area (Region F) will be affected from 8am to 4pm, including City Deep, City Deep Hostel, Prolecon, and Heidelberg Road.
-
Thursday, 29 November: Ennerdale Ext. 1 and Ext. 2 in Lenasia (Region G) will experience outages while work is conducted at Carina Switching Station, also from 8am to 4pm.
Why These Outages Matter
City Power stresses that the maintenance work is essential for improving network reliability. The utility reminded residents to treat all electricity points as live, even during scheduled outages, as supply may be restored unexpectedly.
“We apologise for the inconvenience these planned interruptions may cause,” said a City Power spokesperson. “However, these measures are critical to ensure long-term, stable service delivery across Johannesburg.”
Public Response and Local Context
Residents on social media expressed a mix of frustration and understanding. One Twitter user quipped, “Just in time for working from homeperfect!” while another acknowledged the necessity, noting, “Better now than during peak summer heat or holiday rush.”
Electricity reliability has been a recurring concern in Johannesburg, with aging infrastructure and increasing demand often causing unexpected outages. City Power’s proactive approach this week is part of an ongoing effort to prevent future disruptions.
Tip for Residents: Plan ahead by charging devices, storing water, and adjusting work-from-home schedules to accommodate the interruptions. Suburbs impacted this week should double-check City Power’s updates for real-time changes.
