Joburg Residents Brace for 8–9 Hour Water Interruptions Next Week

Johannesburg residents should prepare for a week of long water interruptions as Johannesburg Water carries out critical maintenance across the city. The planned shutdowns will mainly affect Bryanston, parts of Region E, and the inner city, leaving homes and businesses with either low water pressure or no water for up to nine hours.
Bryanston Residents to Go Without Water on Tuesday
The utility confirmed that on Tuesday, 2 September, water will be cut off on Dover Road in Bryanston from 8am to 4pm. Technicians will be connecting a new water pipe to the existing mainline, a process Johannesburg Water says is unavoidable but essential for long-term service reliability.
“The benefit to customers is improved service delivery and continuity of water supply,” the notice read, reassuring residents that the temporary inconvenience will lead to better water provision in the future.
Local residents have already started taking to social media to prepare. One Bryanston homeowner tweeted, “Stocking up on water because eight hours is a long timethank you @JHBWater for the heads-up.”
Inner City and Region F Faces Low Pressure
Region F residents aren’t off the hook. On the same day, from 10am to 5pm, maintenance will affect streets around Joubert and Albert, including:
-
Frederick Street
-
Rissik Street
-
Loveday Street
-
Eloff Street
Technicians will connect a 110mm pipeline extension to the existing 110mm mainline, which may result in reduced supply rather than a complete cut. Johannesburg Water warns that pressure may fluctuate throughout the day.
“Impact on customers: Low pressure to no water for nine hours,” the utility said.
Randburg Depot Relocation Adds Extra Considerations
Adding to the week’s water concerns, Johannesburg Water is relocating its Randburg Depot to Malanshof. Walk-in services at the current Strydompark location will continue until Friday, 29 August 2025, but the new depot won’t be ready for in-person visits until 15 September 2025.
During this transition, residents are encouraged to use alternative contact methods:
-
24-hour Hotline: 011 688 1699 / 086 056 2874
-
SMS: 45201

Johannesburg Water assures residents that while minor service interruptions may occur, they remain committed to minimizing disruptions during the move.
What Residents Can Do
Residents are advised to stock up on water, especially for cooking, cleaning, and essential daily needs. Businesses may need to adjust schedules for staff and operations. While Johannesburg Water apologizes for the inconvenience, these improvements aim to strengthen the city’s water infrastructure and prevent future breakdowns.
As one Joburg local commented online, “Better a day of no water than dealing with leaks and bursts all year, thanks for the heads-up, JHB Water!”
