Johannesburg Water Contractor Continues Repairs on M1 Bridge Leak in Houghton

Johannesburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) are working together to urgently complete repairs on a leaking pipe beneath the M1 bridge in Houghton.

Motorists warned of ongoing delays

The burst pipe has been leaking onto the M1 near Central Street and Glenhove Road, creating hazards for drivers and adding to traffic congestion. Residents and motorists have been urged to remain patient while work continues.

Complex repair due to location

The leak is located beneath the highway bridge, making repairs technically difficult because of restricted access around the concrete bearing structure. Johannesburg Water brought in specialised contractors to address the problem.

When JRA inspected the site on September 10, they found a leaking pipe and a road that had not been backfilled as Johannesburg Water had committed.

Separate leak discovered

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that during last week’s work, the contractor discovered a second, smaller leak in the same area.

“This was a separate leak from the original one. Water was isolated, and the leak has since been repaired,” Shabalala said.

Coordination between agencies

JRA’s head of regional operations, Khaya Gqibitole, confirmed Johannesburg Water is still finalising work on the original burst pipe.

“Once completed, JRA will be on-site to undertake the required reinstatement. The entities are working closely to ensure the work along this critical route is completed as a matter of urgency so that normal traffic can resume,” Gqibitole said.
