Johannesburg residents are being urged to prepare for intermittent water supply as Rand Water undertakes critical maintenance work across several of its systems between June 3 and July 21, 2025. The ongoing maintenance is part of the utility’s effort to ensure the long-term health of the city’s water infrastructure—but it may come with some inconvenience for those in the affected areas.

Johannesburg Water has warned that some neighborhoods may experience reduced water pressure or even complete outages, depending on the stage of the maintenance and the system being worked on. Residents are strongly encouraged to store water in advance and use it sparingly throughout the period.

What to Expect

The scheduled work begins on June 3, when pumping at the Palmiet system will be reduced to 67% for 10 hours due to cleaning operations in the Klipriviersberg area.

From June 30, more intensive maintenance kicks off:

  • The Eikenhof system will undergo repairs at the Zuikerbosch water treatment plant, starting with no pumping for 6 hours, followed by pumping at 50% capacity for 42 hours, and finally 80% capacity for the remainder of the schedule.

  • The Zwartkopjes system will also be affected starting June 30, with complete shutdowns during valve replacement operations.

  • Simultaneously, cleaning of sedimentation tanks at the Vereeniging purification plant will begin and continue until July 21, further impacting supply across the same systems.

Each round of maintenance may result in delays of several days before water pressure returns to normal levels, even after work is completed.

How to Prepare

Residents in the impacted areas should:

  • Fill up containers and tanks in advance.

  • Minimize water usage wherever possible.

  • Monitor updates from Johannesburg Water and Rand Water through their official platforms and social media channels.

  • Watch for roaming water tankers, which may be deployed to assist in high-need zones.

Johannesburg Water emphasized that while the short-term inconvenience is unavoidable, the upgrades are vital to prevent larger system failures in the future.
