They were hired to fix roads. Now they can’t afford food.

Employees of Rebone Business Enterprise, a company contracted by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) , say they have not been paid since September.

The Work

The workers were hired to work on gravel roads in Orange Farm. In December, they were asked to return to fix sewage blocking the area where they had been working.

“We did the work and were promised we would be paid in January.”

The Reality

A 39-year-old father of two told Sowetan that the last time they received salaries was in September.

“We are surviving on my mother’s grant and my children’s grants. Other than that, we have nothing, which means there is often no food at home.”

He is owed about R30,000, excluding overtime.

The Explanation

When workers approached the JRA, they were told the contractor had not submitted the supporting documents needed to process payments.

The Bottom Line

Six months without pay. Families surviving on children’s grants. Workers who fixed roads and sewage now begging for food.

The contractor failed to submit documents. The workers failed to get paid. And the JRAthe agency that hired themis now facing the consequences of a contractor it chose.
