Kaya FM Fires Sol Phenduka Following Suspension

Johannesburg-based Kaya FM announced the immediate termination of Sol Phenduka’s contract on 1 September 2025. Phenduka co-hosted the breakfast show Siz the World with Sizwe Dhlomo, Mpho Maboi, and Mfundo Mabalane.

Reason for dismissal

The dismissal followed an internal review of Phenduka’s public conduct, particularly remarks made on the MacG Vodcast about actress Minnie Dlamini. Acting Managing Executive Dave Tiltmann stated:

“Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with the respect owed to women.”

Phenduka had previously received written assurances in 2023 that such conduct would not be repeated. Kaya FM emphasized that the decision aligns with the station’s values of trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity.

Court case context

Dlamini is suing Phenduka and MacGyver ‘MacG’ Mukwevho for R2.5 million in damages for hate speech, unfair discrimination, and harassment. Phenduka linked his suspension to the ongoing legal case, stating he was surprised by the station’s public announcement as he was asked to keep the matter private.

The termination underscores Kaya FM’s stance on public accountability and maintaining respect toward women in media spaces.
