In a dramatic early morning operation in one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most crime-ridden areas, five wanted suspects were shot and killed during a fierce shootout with police in Inanda, north of Durban, on Thursday.

According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the menall South African nationalswere high-priority targets wanted for a string of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery. The confrontation was the culmination of a manhunt that began in late November 2025, when the same group allegedly opened fire on police officers and subsequently went into hiding.

“They Opened Fire First”: The Police Account

Acting on precise intelligence, a police team descended on a house in the Bester area (Area 5) of Inanda in the pre-dawn hours. Netshiunda stated that officers announced their presence, but were immediately met with gunfire from inside the premises.

“The police were left with no other choice but to return fire to protect themselves and those around the house,” Netshiunda told Newzroom Afrika. The exchange left all five suspects fatally wounded. A preliminary search of the scene yielded four recovered firearms. No police officers were injured in what was described as a “dangerous” operation.

Part of a Broader Crackdown

The incident is not isolated. It forms part of a concerted police crackdown in the Inanda policing precinct, which is notoriously plagued by violent crime. Just a day earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, two other suspects wanted for a separate shooting in Ezimangweni that left two dead were also killed in a shootout with police in nearby Amaoti.

These back-to-back operations signal a clear, intensified strategy by police to confront armed and violent criminals head-on in the province’s hotspots. While investigations into both incidents continue, the message from law enforcement is unambiguous: those who shoot at police and terrorise communities will be met with decisive force.

For a community weary of violence, the operation represents a significant, if grim, disruption of criminal networks. However, it also underscores the perilous, daily reality for police operating in areas where the rule of law is constantly challenged by the barrel of a gun.
