Tragic KZN Accident: Taxi Plunges Into Crèche, Claims Three Young Lives

A shocking accident in the Imbali area of the KZN Midlands has left three children dead and eleven others injured after a minibus taxi crashed into a local crèche on Thursday morning.
The collision occurred at around 7:30 am on the T6 road, throwing the small community into chaos. Paramedics described the scene as “deeply distressing,” with a crumpled taxi lodged amidst the wreckage of the building and the cries of terrified children filling the air.
“The youngest victims, between nine and eleven years old, died at the scene,” said KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service. “Two patients are in critical condition, and nine sustained serious injuries.”
The Human Impact
The injured children, aged between nine and fifteen, were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals. Families are grappling with shock and grief as the community comes to terms with the sudden tragedy. Social media users have expressed outrage and heartbreak, with many calling for tighter regulation of minibus taxis and safer transport for children.
One local parent wrote on X:
“How does a taxi end up in a crèche? My heart goes out to all the families. Something must change.”
Officials Respond
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed that the taxi apparently lost control before plunging into the crèche. He immediately dispatched a team to the scene and is coordinating support for the affected families.
“Our hearts are with the parents of the affected children. We are working closely with healthcare professionals and the families to provide support during this incredibly difficult time,” Duma said.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service also praised its personnel for their rapid and professional response under harrowing conditions.
“We commend the bravery of our paramedics, who worked tirelessly to stabilize the injured. Our deepest condolences go to the families and friends of those who lost their lives,” the service said.
A Community in Shock
The accident has cast a spotlight on the safety of school transport in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where minibus taxis are a common mode of transport for children. Advocacy groups have renewed calls for stricter oversight, regular vehicle inspections, and enhanced driver training to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As emergency services and authorities continue to support the victims and their families, the Imbali community is left mourning the loss of three young lives, while hoping for the recovery of those injured.
