Concerns about racism at Laerskool Losberg in Fochville have been officially dismissed after the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) concluded an investigation into the claims. The move brings closure to weeks of speculation that had put the school under an uncomfortable spotlight.

Allegations spark community interest

The issue first surfaced when local resident Bongile Thebogo raised complaints with several media outlets and municipal officials. The allegations suggested that learners and parents from different cultural backgrounds were not treated equally at the school. With tensions around transformation in education often hitting the headlines, the claims quickly drew wider attention.

GDE steps in with investigation

In response, the GDE confirmed it launched a full investigation, supported by oversight visits. According to department spokesperson Steve Mabona, the probe found no substance to the allegations against the school’s leadership.

The inquiry confirmed that:

  • The school’s Grade R application day was an open invitation to all parents.

  • English learners significantly outnumber Afrikaans learners, with 593 enrolled in English classes compared to 215 in Afrikaans.

  • The school is actively developing facilities, including a new nursery and upgraded safety walls.

  • School Governing Body (SGB) meetings are being held regularly, with attendance registers and confirmations provided as proof.

Mabona stressed that the department consistently promotes equality and dignity across Gauteng schools, saying, “All schools are thoroughly inducted into a culture where transformational principles and rights are prioritised.”

Context and local reaction

Although the allegations were dismissed, the episode reflects ongoing sensitivities in South African education around inclusion, language, and historical inequalities. Parents on social media have expressed relief that clarity was provided, with some praising the school for its strong English stream and visible efforts to expand facilities. Others note that vigilance is still necessary to ensure transformation goals remain at the front of mind across the province.

Looking ahead

The GDE reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring school environments are free of all forms of discrimination, whether racial, cultural, gender-based, or religious. For Laerskool Losberg, the investigation’s outcome restores its standing, allowing staff and learners to focus on growth and education without the cloud of controversy.
