As Johannesburg prepares to roll out the red carpet for the world’s most powerful leaders at the G20 Summit later this month, a pressing local question hangs in the air: will the city’s lights stay on and its taps keep flowing?

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has now issued a definitive answer: Yes.

In a comprehensive media briefing, Lesufi sought to allay fears and assure both international delegates and residents that the summit, scheduled for 22-23 November 2025, will not be marred by the service delivery challenges that have become a daily reality for many.

A Promise Against the Backdrop of Reality

The Premier’s assurances come at a time when the City of Johannesburg continues to grapple with persistent water shortages, erratic electricity outages, and crumbling urban infrastructure. Critics have been quick to label the visible cleanup in the CBDwith freshly cut grass and cleared illegal dumpsas a temporary façade for the global event.

However, Lesufi framed the efforts as part of significant, permanent upgrades. “We are ready to host the summit,” he declared, outlining a multi-layered contingency plan designed to deliver a seamless experience.

The Blueprint for Uninterrupted Services

So, how will the province achieve this temporary utopia of reliability? The plan leaves little to chance.

For water security, Johannesburg Water has guaranteed a stable supply, backed by Rand Water’s commitment to an uninterrupted bulk water provision. The strategy includes:

  • Dedicated maintenance teams stationed along key routes.

  • Water tankers on standby for any localised issues.

  • A 24/7 command centre with clear protocols to escalate and resolve any disruptions instantly.

On the energy front, a “comprehensive energy plan” is already in effect. Key elements include:

  • Completed primary electrification for all key venues and transport corridors.

  • Emergency generators deployed at critical sites, including OR Tambo International Airport, the convention centre, and major hotels.

  • High-mast solar lighting to enhance safety and provide backup illumination.

More Than Just a Quick Fix

Beyond keeping the lights on, the province is in the final stages of a widespread beautification and safety drive. Lesufi reported that streetlight rehabilitation is nearly complete, new street furniture and bins have been installed, and public spaces have been greened, with a focus on tourist areas like the Cradle of Humankind.

Security will be a unified front, with the Gauteng Disaster Management Centre acting as the nerve centre. This integrated command hub will coordinate all emergency services, law enforcement, and essential service providers in real-time to manage everything from medical emergencies to logistical disruptions.

The message from the Premier’s office is one of confident preparedness. It’s a massive undertaking, a promise to present a flawless face to the world. For Johannesburg residents, the hope will be that these “permanent upgrades” and robust contingency plans leave a lasting legacy long after the last G20 delegate has departed.
