In a quiet corner of Daggakraal, a final, brutal argument shattered the sacred bond between a mother and her son. The outcome was so violent that it has now ended with a life sentence behind bars.

Thami Sydney Mnyandu, 43, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of his 75-year-old mother, Ntobizodwa Masina. The Amersfoort Regional Court delivered the ultimate sentence, concluding a case that exposed a tragic story of domestic violence and a son’s uncontrollable rage.

A Fatal Morning Assault

The tragedy unfolded on the morning of July 25, 2024. Police were called to a home in Sinqobile, where they made a harrowing discovery. The elderly Masina was lying unconscious in her yard, her face bearing the devastating marks of a severe assault.

Inside the house, they found her son, Mnyandu. It was there, amidst the scene of the crime, that he allegedly confessed. He told officers that he and his mother had argued, and in a fit of fury, he “lost his temper” and attacked her.

A Protection Order Ignored, A Life Lost

Initially charged with assault, the case took a grim turn when police uncovered a chilling detail: a protection order had already been issued against Mnyandu. The court had legally forbidden him from assaulting, threatening, or insulting his mother, a measure that ultimately failed to protect her.

Masina was rushed to the hospital, where doctors found more injuriesa wound under her breast and a cut on her forehead. After being discharged, she succumbed to her injuries days later, and the charge against her son was upgraded to murder.

The life sentence serves as a stark conclusion to a life cut short by familial violence. Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the investigating officer for securing the conviction and expressed hope that it would bring the family some solace.

The case stands as a grim reminder of the pervasive threat of gender-based violence and the vulnerability of the elderly, even within their own homes. For Ntobizodwa Masina, the justice system has spoken, but it comes too late to undo the irreversible loss inflicted by her own son.
