Tragedy in Limpopo: Man Kills Wife and Sister-in-Law, Turns Gun on Himself

‘Senseless Act’: Limpopo Family Devastated by Fatal Shooting
A quiet village outside Hoedspruit was shaken to its core on Saturday, when a 45-year-old man allegedly opened fire on his family in Mabins B, killing his wife and sister-in-law before turning the gun on himself. The shocking incident has sparked widespread concern over domestic violence and gun safety in the province.
The Shooting Unfolded
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect arrived at his wife’s residence around midday, parked his vehicle, and allegedly began shooting. Two women, aged 44 and 36, were killed instantly, while a 34-year-old sister-in-law sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, described the scene: “On arrival, police found two lifeless bodies with multiple gunshot wounds. The brother of the victims pointed out the bodies and informed police that the suspect had suddenly opened fire on them.”
After the attack, the suspect fled but was later found dead at his own residence, having apparently shot himself.
Community and Police Reaction
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the killings as “a disturbing example of domestic violence,” urging families to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.
“Innocent lives are being lost unnecessarily due to such senseless acts,” Hadebe said, highlighting a broader concern around family disputes escalating into tragedy.
Social media reactions have reflected shock and sorrow, with residents of Mabins B expressing grief and frustration. Many called for stronger intervention mechanisms to prevent domestic violence, while some shared personal stories of loss, underscoring the human cost of such incidents.
Investigation Underway
Police have opened two counts of murder and one of attempted murder as part of their investigation. The motive remains unknown, and authorities are working to gather more information.
The incident echoes a similarly brutal case in Limpopo last year, when Thabo Ali Molobela, 37, was convicted for killing two people and wounding four others during a family dispute in Makgophong village, Magatle. That shooting, which also involved marital conflict, highlighted long-standing concerns about domestic violence escalating to lethal outcomes.
Colonel Ledwaba noted, “The accused and his wife had marital issues, which remained unresolved when he then resorted to shooting his wife, their child, sister-in-law, and the wife’s cousin.”
A Call for Awareness and Prevention
As police investigations continue in Mabins B, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unresolved domestic tensions and the need for community-based interventions. Experts stress that access to firearms combined with family disputes can create deadly outcomes, and that authorities and communities must work together to prevent similar tragedies.
For the residents of Mabins B, the aftermath of Saturday’s shootings will be felt for a long time, a haunting reminder of how quickly domestic issues can spiral out of control.
