A quiet walk home in Mmadiga Village, Ga-Dikgale, turned into a nightmare last month, leading to a cross-province police operation. A 36-year-old man has now been arrested in Gauteng for the alleged drive-by shooting that killed a 42-year-old local resident in what appears to be a shockingly casual act of violence.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the incident occurred in the early hours of 2 November. The victim was walking with a friend when a vehicle pulled up beside them. The occupants allegedly began hurling insults. When the two pedestrians did not engage, a passenger in the car is accused of opening fire, striking the 42-year-old man before the vehicle sped off into the night.

From Crime Scene to Courtroom: The Investigation Unfolds

The victim was rushed to Mankweng Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Police, who recovered spent cartridges at the scene, opened a murder case. For weeks, investigators pieced together evidence, culminating in a breakthrough last Friday. The alleged shooter was tracked to Gauteng, where he was apprehended. In a significant development, police also recovered a firearm believed to be the murder weapon.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 December, to face a murder charge.

Police Hail “Swift Work” and Weapon Removal

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the investigative team for their work. She highlighted the firearm recovery as evidence of the SAPS’s commitment to “removing dangerous criminals and illegal weapons from communities.”

The arrest brings a measure of relief to a community shaken by the brazen killing, but it also underscores a grim reality: that a perceived slight from a moving vehicle can escalate to fatal violence in an instant. As the case moves to court, the focus will turn to establishing motive and delivering justice for a life cut short on a village road.
