A Limpopo woman accused of assaulting her house helper is expected to appear in the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court in Tzaneen for a formal bail application.
The case first came to light last week when the house helper, Priscilla Mmusi, was found lying in the street and rushed to Letaba Hospital with injuries. She is now recovering at home.
Mmusi described a disturbing series of events that allegedly took place at the woman’s home:
The employer reportedly forced her to buy alcohol from a liquor outlet, despite staff refusing to sell due to previous violent behaviour.
At home, the employer allegedly pressured Mmusi to drink alcohol mixed with an unknown liquid.
During the day, she is said to have threatened Mmusi, pointed a rifle at her, and set two dogs on her.
Mmusi fainted and woke up at a local clinic, feeling she had been drugged.
The woman faces charges of assault and pointing a firearm, with court proceedings set for tomorrow.
Local community leader Given Mlondobodzi announced plans to protest the potential granting of bail, saying:
“We are not saying this is a racial issue, but no human being should treat a fellow person like that.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba has not provided further comment on the case.
Authorities are investigating the allegations, and Mmusi is expected to testify in court. The community is watching closely, with many calling for justice and stricter measures to protect domestic workers in the area.
The case highlights broader concerns about domestic worker safety and the urgent need for law enforcement to act decisively when abuse is reported.
