A high school principal in Limpopo’s Capricorn District has been suspended with immediate effect after allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old Grade 12 learner. The incident has triggered swift action from the Department of Education and renewed public outrage over gender-based violence in South African schools.

What allegedly happened

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that on 11 August 2025, a learner was using her cellphone during class when it was confiscated and handed to the principal. On 16 August, during extra lessons, she went to retrieve the phone from his office. That is when the principal allegedly kissed her without her consent.

The learner reported the incident to her mother, who took her to the police. The principal, who is 51 years old, was arrested shortly after.

Court appearance and bail

On 22 August, the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court granted the accused bail of R3,000. He was warned not to contact the learner or interfere with investigations. If he fails to appear in court, his bail will be forfeited.

Although the state did not oppose bail, the matter has been postponed to 20 October 2025 for further investigation.

Education department takes action

Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said the allegations are a blow to efforts aimed at protecting learners’ rights. She stressed the department’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence in schools.

Spokesperson Mike Maringa confirmed that the principal was suspended immediately and that psycho-social support will be provided to the learner. No further comments will be made while the case is before court.

Community concern and public reaction

The case has sparked anger and concern among parents and education activists. Many on social media have demanded accountability and transparency, especially in rural schools where learners may feel silenced. The case also highlights the need for stronger internal reporting systems and support structures for victims within schools.

This is not the first time school leaders have faced such allegations, but the swift suspension and legal action offer a glimpse of progress in how these matters are being handled.
