Former Marine Pleads Not Guilty in Liverpool Parade Crash Case

Liverpool’s celebration of a historic Premier League triumph last May is still overshadowed by the tragedy that struck on Water Street. What should have been a day of pure joy for the city turned into chaos when a vehicle ploughed into fans. Now, the man accused of causing that devastation has formally denied all charges.
The Court Appearance
Paul Doyle, a 53-year-old former British marine and father of three from Croxteth, appeared by videolink before Liverpool Crown Court. He pleaded not guilty to 31 offences connected to the incident, which affected 29 people ranging from a six-month-old baby to a 77-year-old pensioner.
The charges include dangerous driving, grievous bodily harm with intent, and affray. Prosecutors allege that Doyle drove his car directly into the crowds gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th league title on 26 May.
What Happened That Day
The city had come alive in red, with thousands lining the streets to celebrate Jurgen Klopp’s team lifting the Premier League trophy. But celebrations turned into panic when Doyle’s vehicle reportedly struck fans on Water Street. Merseyside Police later confirmed that 134 people were injured in the incident, with several requiring hospital treatment.
For Liverpool, a city deeply intertwined with its football identity, the crash was not just an attack on supporters but a scar on one of its proudest moments.
Trial Set for November
A provisional trial date has been scheduled for 24 November, and proceedings are expected to last up to a month. The case will likely revisit painful memories for many of those present, with survivors and families of victims anxiously awaiting justice.
Public Reaction
The city’s reaction remains one of shock and resilience. Social media has been flooded with messages of support for the victims, with many Liverpool fans describing the day as a “stolen celebration.” Others have voiced frustration over the long wait for closure, as the community continues to heal from an incident that rattled its collective spirit.
