EFF leader takes aim at former ally in fiery public takedown

In true Julius Malema fashion, the EFF leader didn’t hold back during a press conference on Thursday, accusing Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene of lying about his alleged ties to Katiso “KT” Molefe, the businessman suspected in the murder of well-known music producer DJ Sumbody.

At the party’s 12th anniversary briefing in Cape Town, Malema turned what was supposed to be a celebration into a moment of political firepower, tearing into Kunene with a mix of sarcasm and unfiltered rage.

“Kenny’s story is not coming together,” Malema said with a smirk. “It’s a pure lie. And that’s how the tsotsis operate, they lie and lie until someone believes them.”

The Molefe-Malema-Kunene Triangle

To rewind, DJ Sumbody (Oupa Sefoka) was gunned down in 2022 in a brazen shooting that stunned fans and the South African entertainment industry. His alleged killer, KT Molefe, has recently made headlines after police arrested him in connection to the case.

Kunene, caught at Molefe’s Sandton home during the arrest, claimed he was there on business, specifically escorting a young journalist to get Molefe’s side of the story. But Malema isn’t buying it.

“Who takes a journalist to a guy on bail, fresh out of prison?” Malema scoffed. “He says he doesn’t know Molefe? That’s a lie. I know Molefe, not personally, but the man’s a public figure.”

While Malema admits he’s not close to Molefe, he says the businessman has long been a known entity in Johannesburg’s upper circles. For Kunene, a former sushi king turned politician, to pretend he has no clue who Molefe is? Malema finds that laughable.

“They’re Just Mapantinti” Malema’s Harsh Words

Malema didn’t mince words, branding Kunene and his associates as “mapantinti” a township slang for criminals.

“These people are not politicians. They’re thugs. They behave like gangsters, like the 26s and 28s. That’s why they lie without shame.”

Patriotic Alliance Pushes Back

Kunene hasn’t spoken publicly since the press conference, but his boss, PA leader Gayton McKenzie, came to his defense earlier this week, albeit with some reservations.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament and during a Facebook Live, McKenzie admitted Kunene was at Molefe’s house but insists his longtime ally was misled.

“He was sent a location pin and went there, not knowing whose house it was,” McKenzie said. “When the police arrived, he followed instructions, lay on the floor, and they searched his phone. They found nothing. They apologised and let him go.”

Despite this defense, McKenzie has placed Kunene on a 30-day leave of absence from both his role as Johannesburg MMC and all PA party duties. A law firm has been appointed to investigate Kunene’s involvement, with results expected soon.

South Africans React: “Politics or Cover-Up?”

Online, South Africans have been sharply divided. On X (formerly Twitter), some users praised Malema for exposing what they see as political rot:

“Malema is speaking facts. These guys think they can fool the country like it’s the Wild West,” one user wrote.

Others were more skeptical, pointing fingers at the timing of Malema’s attack, just as the EFF celebrates its 12th anniversary and local elections loom in the background.

“He’s just using Kunene as ammo for his campaign,” one commenter noted. “They all have skeletons.”

A Growing Pattern of Political Street Theater

This isn’t the first time South Africa has seen political drama spill into the public arena, but this one blends pop culture, alleged criminality, and ego-fueled rivalry in explosive fashion. Kunene, a former convict turned businessman and media mogul, has long been a controversial figure. That Malema, once close to many in the PA’s founding circle, would use a murder case to take a public shot shows just how deep the rifts in South African politics run.

For now, all eyes are on the law firm’s investigation and whether it clears Kunene’s name or proves Malema right.
