“He’s Coming Home”: Joy and Relief as Mandla Mandela Set to Return from Israeli Detention

For days, South Africans held their breath, waiting for news about Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, who had been detained in Israel alongside other South Africans participating in a humanitarian mission to Gaza.

Now, that anxious wait is finally over. Mandela’s wife, Nosekeni Rabia Mandela, has confirmed that her husband is coming home and her joy is palpable.

A wife’s relief after days of uncertainty

Speaking with emotion and gratitude, Nosekeni said she was “grateful beyond words” to everyone who worked tirelessly to secure Mandela’s release.

“I am grateful beyond words for the relentless dedication of the Global Sumud Flotilla legal team, Adalah, the local GSF support crew, and Dirco,” she said. “Their tireless efforts secured the release of the South African delegation. Hearing that my husband is finally coming home fills my heart with pure joy, tears of relief, love, and gratitude. I can’t wait to hold you again, my love.”

Her words echoed the collective sigh of relief felt across the country. On social media, South Africans celebrated the news with messages of support and love for the Mandela family, praising the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) for its swift diplomatic intervention.

A mission of solidarity ends in detention

Mandla Mandela and the group had joined the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a civil society initiative aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla whose name “Sumud” means “steadfastness” in Arabic sought to show solidarity with Palestinians living under blockade.

However, their journey took a dramatic turn when Israeli forces intercepted the vessel, detaining those on board. For South Africans, the arrest struck a deep emotional chord especially given the nation’s own history of apartheid and its long-standing solidarity with Palestine.

Diplomatic talks bring them home

After days of uncertainty and growing pressure from local advocacy groups, Dirco confirmed on Monday that the detained South Africans were scheduled for release.

“We have received confirmation that the individuals in question are scheduled to be released from detention and will be repatriated, departing via Jordan tomorrow morning,” said Dirco spokesperson Chrispin Phiri.

Minister Ronald Lamola also extended gratitude to all parties involved, including Israeli authorities and the legal teams who facilitated the release.

“We extend our gratitude to all relevant parties, both domestically and internationally, for their cooperation and coordination in ensuring the return of the South African citizens,” Lamola said.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to protecting South African citizens abroad, especially those engaging in humanitarian and peace-building missions.

A homecoming steeped in symbolism

Mandla Mandela’s return carries weight beyond personal relief. As a descendant of Nelson Mandela and a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, his detention and now his release have reignited conversations about South Africa’s foreign policy stance on Israel and Gaza.

Many view the episode as another reminder of South Africa’s deep-rooted commitment to international solidarity, while others have called for continued caution when citizens participate in politically sensitive missions abroad.

Still, for now, the mood is one of celebration. Outside of the political noise, a wife is preparing to welcome her husband home a reunion filled with gratitude, relief, and love.

And as Nosekeni put it best:

“He’s coming home.”
