Mbombela Accident on R40 Leaves Over 10 People Injured
Three vehicles collide near Riverside
Traffic came to a standstill in Mbombela on September 16 after a serious crash on the R40 involving a Buscor bus, a minibus taxi, and a VW Polo hatchback. More than ten people sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Emergency teams had to use the Jaws of Life to free the Polo’s driver and the front passenger of the taxi. Injured passengers from the bus and taxi were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Buscor driver escaped without injury.
Eyewitness account points to traffic violation
According to eyewitnesses, the minibus taxi was heading toward Mbombela when it turned right at a red traffic light without stopping. The taxi collided with the Polo before crashing into the bus, which was travelling toward White River.
The impact left wreckage scattered across the road, forcing authorities to temporarily close the route while recovery operations were carried out. The road has since been reopened.
Investigation under way
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety and Security Liaison, confirmed that an investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the crash. He urged motorists to drive responsibly, especially on busy routes like the R40 where high traffic volumes increase the risk of accidents.
Road safety concerns in Mbombela
The R40 has become known for heavy congestion and frequent collisions, especially involving taxis and buses that transport large numbers of commuters daily. The incident has sparked renewed calls from residents for stricter traffic enforcement and more visible policing at major intersections.
On community pages, many expressed relief that there were no fatalities but also voiced frustration about reckless driving, with one local commenting: “It’s always the same story on the R40. Someone ignores the light, and innocent people suffer.”
