Police say no signs of intoxication after McLaren crash in Sea Point

Cape Town police have clarified that there is no suspicion of driving under the influence in the crash involving a McLaren sports car driven by Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel “3GAR Baby” Obioma. The incident occurred in March in Sea Point, after the McLaren 570S lost control and crashed into a wall on High Level Road.

What authorities say

According to a reply by the police ministry to a parliamentary question, no alcohol or drug tests were performed. Police state there was no information or reasonable suspicion to suggest that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

When officers arrived at the scene, the driver had already been taken away by paramedics for medical treatment.

Legal outcomes

Reckless and negligent driving charges were registered by Sea Point police after the crash. However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reviewed the case and decided not to prosecute.

Criticism and concerns

A DA Member of Parliament, Nicholas Gotsell, criticized police and prosecutorial decisions. He asked why standard proceduresuch as administering blood alcohol or drug testswas apparently not followed. He suggested the decision not to test the driver sends a dangerous message about the enforcement of DUI laws.

On social media, some people echoed his concerns. They called for more consistent enforcement in cases of reckless driving, especially when expensive cars are involved, so that accountability is seen as equal for everyone.

What this means

This case has stirred debate over how seriously DUI laws are applied, particularly in incidents involving celebrities or high-value vehicles. For the public, the lack of testing in a serious crash raises questions about fairness and whether procedures differ depending on who is involved.

Police maintain there was no basis to conduct tests after assessing the scene. The NPA must weigh evidence when deciding whether to prosecute. In this case they declined prosecution.
