Two die in light aircraft crash at Middelburg Airfield

A pilot and passenger lost their lives when a light aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff at Middelburg Airfield in Mpumalanga on Sunday afternoon.
The Rans-S10 Sakota aircraft had just departed from the airstrip around 4pm when it came down within the airfield’s perimeter. Both individuals on board were declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
According to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa), the plane was engulfed in flames after the crash. “The aircraft was destroyed by the post-impact fire,” said the authority’s accident and incident investigations division on Monday.
The crash site was secured overnight and placed under police guard. Investigators returned on Monday morning to collect evidence for a preliminary report.
The Sacaa confirmed the findings of the investigation will be made public within 30 days on its official website.
