Eight Learners Face Court After Viral School Assault Video

The bullying incident that has rocked Milnerton High School is set to take a new turn as eight learners, aged between 17 and 18, are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. They face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a brutal attack on a Grade 10 learner.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the charges, stating that the suspects are expected to answer for their alleged involvement in the violent assault that took place on October 16.

Shocking Footage Sparks Public Outcry

The case gained national attention after a disturbing video surfaced online, showing a 16-year-old boy being beaten, slapped, and humiliated by several teenagers, reportedly members of Milnerton High’s rugby first team. The attack, believed to have occurred shortly after school hours on or near school grounds, has ignited widespread concern about the persistence of violence and bullying in South African schools.

Department Steps In As Learners Suspended

In response to the incident, the Western Cape Education Department confirmed that eight learners have been suspended pending disciplinary hearings. Department officials also stated that psychological and emotional support services have been offered to the victim and affected learners.

Parents Demand Accountability

Tensions heightened on Wednesday as a group of parents gathered outside Milnerton High School to protest what they describe as the school’s “ongoing failure” to address bullying. Some parents alleged that their children had also experienced similar violent incidents that were filmed and circulated among students, with little disciplinary action from the school.

The protest underscored growing frustration among parents and the wider community, who are calling for stricter enforcement of anti-bullying policies and greater transparency from school management.

The court proceedings are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the assault and the role of each accused learner. The case also renews the national conversation about school safety and the urgent need for stronger interventions to protect learners from violence.
