The Pretoria community is on edge as authorities continue the search for Sergeant Ben Moloko, a Brooklyn police officer who mysteriously disappeared last week. Last seen on September 9 near the intersection of Pretorius and WF Nkomo streets, Moloko’s sudden disappearance has sparked concern across law enforcement circles and the public alike.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, Sergeant Moloko failed to report for his High Court duties on September 8, prompting initial concern. “When he did not report again on the 9th, his family was contacted, and a missing person’s enquiry was opened at the Brooklyn police station,” Muridili said.

Investigators later located Moloko’s vehicle parked at Church Square in Pretoria Central, but the officer himself was nowhere to be found. The discovery intensified fears for his safety, with the police deploying K9 units and Search and Rescue teams to search areas Moloko was known to frequent.

A chilling development

The search took a darker turn on September 14, when a body was discovered in Mogogelo, North West, burned beyond recognition and with hands cuffed behind the back. Police forensic teams are now conducting DNA tests, comparing samples from Moloko’s family to determine if the remains belong to the missing officer.

“The investigation is ongoing, and every lead is being followed,” Muridili said. “At this stage, it cannot be confirmed whether the body is that of Sergeant Moloko.”
