Political fallout erupts in the MK Party as Floyd Shivambu accuses top leaders of manipulation and drug use, but legal action looms.

Tensions inside the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party have spilled into public view, with former secretary-general Floyd Shivambu making stunning allegations against party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, who has now threatened legal action in response.

Shivambu, who was removed from the MK Party’s leadership and omitted from its list of Members of Parliament, accused Ndhlela of being a habitual drug and alcohol abuser and slammed Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, as “gullible and directionless”.

Shivambu Unleashes on Live TV

In a fiery interview with eNCA, Shivambu claimed he was unfairly sidelined by insecure party members:

“I was far more qualitatively superior to all the people I found in the leadership of uMkhonto weSizwe.”

He took aim at Ndhlela, alleging he was:

  • “Always on drugs and high on alcohol”

  • Feeding misinformation to Jacob Zuma

  • Using Zuma’s daughter as a “front” to push a false agenda

Asked whether he publicly accused Zuma-Sambudla of being a “druggie,” Shivambu deflected:

“I said people who take drugs insult me at night online. If anyone wants names, I’ll give them privately.”

Ndhlela Fires Back, Lawyers Involved

Ndhlela, now a Member of Parliament and MK Party spokesperson, dismissed Shivambu’s rant as the outburst of a “wounded” man:

“He’s clearly wounded and trying to drag me through the mud.”

Ndhlela confirmed to IOL News that legal action is on the way:

“My lawyers are sending him a letter. I want a public apology. I’ve never fought him, I don’t need to. I’m miles ahead in intellect.”

He also accused Shivambu of:

  • Lying about receiving a mandate from Zuma to meet fugitive prophet Shepherd Bushiri

  • Trying to hijack the party by changing official structures before his dismissal

  • Acting as an “agent in our midst”

Inside MK: A Divided Movement

This public fallout has exposed deep fractures in the young but high-profile MK Party, launched with Jacob Zuma’s blessing ahead of the 2024 elections.

Shivambu insists he’s still a member, but he’s also forming a new party, currently consulting the public on its structure and values.

“We believe existing political parties no longer represent the true political emancipation of South Africans.”

Defending Zuma’s Daughter

In response to the attacks on Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Ndhlela defended her role in the party:

“If anyone’s directionless, it’s the one forming a new party after being fired.”

He added that Shivambu’s unauthorised travels and rogue structural decisions revealed more about his political recklessness than anything else.

What’s Next?

  • Ndhlela’s legal team is preparing a defamation suit

  • Shivambu is mobilising support for a new political movement

  • MK Party leadership is bracing for more internal leaks and public blowback

The MK Party’s power struggle is no longer behind closed doors and the fallout could redefine South Africa’s left-wing opposition space. With legal threats, political betrayals, and new movements brewing, the next chapter of this political drama is only just beginning.
