Moses Tembe Promises a People-Centered Revival of South Africa’s National Lottery

The lottery in South Africa has always carried a certain kind of hope. For many, it’s not just about the possibility of winning big — it’s about the promise that even if they don’t win, the proceeds will go toward building better communities. Now, as Moses Tembe steps into the spotlight as the face of the new National Lottery operator, that promise is being reimagined with a renewed sense of purpose.
Tembe, the chairman of Sizekhaya Holdings, is adamant: this isn’t just business, it’s personal.
“When the lottery works well, it’s a lifeline,” he told supporters in a heartfelt message following his company’s official selection as the new operator.
More than a game: A mission with heart
Tembe’s enthusiasm is more than just corporate cheerleading. As he sees it, the National Lottery has always had the potential to be a powerful tool for transformation — and under Sizekhaya Holdings, that’s exactly what he intends to make it.
He recalls the spirit in which the lottery was first introduced to a democratic South Africa: a vision rooted in equity, support for the vulnerable, and inclusive growth. And while the lottery has already channelled funds to thousands of community projects over the past 25 years, Tembe believes it’s time to go further.
“We want the lottery to do more than just scratch the surface. We’re here to dig deep into real, long-term impact,” he said.
Meet the team behind the vision
Sizekhaya Holdings isn’t going it alone. Backed by a consortium that includes well-known players in the gaming and business world, the group has both the experience and credibility to steer the ship.
The Goldrush Group, a JSE-listed company with decades of experience in gaming and online betting, holds a 50% stake in Sizekhaya Holdings. That, paired with the business acumen of partners like Bellamont Gaming (of which Tembe is a director) and Sandile Zungu, sets the tone for serious, experienced leadership.
And Tembe himself isn’t new to the game — with 35 years in the industry, he knows the mechanics, the pitfalls, and more importantly, the people.
Ithuba bows out (almost)
Of course, any transition comes with some tension. Ithuba, the current operator, has been a fixture of the lottery scene for years. Initially poised to contest the decision, the company has since struck a compromise with government.
Michelle van Trotsenburg, speaking on behalf of Ithuba, confirmed that the company will continue running operations for five more months. After that, it will formally hand over the reins to Sizekhaya Holdings.
Still, she made it clear that the games will go on — and that participants need not worry about prize payouts or integrity.
“We remain committed to South Africans and will ensure a smooth transition,” she stated.
What’s next? A bigger vision for South Africa
With the court ruling now on record and agreements reached, attention turns to what the next chapter will look like. Tembe envisions a more inclusive, transparent, and socially responsive lottery. One that actively engages with the communities it serves and makes sure the money flows to where it matters most.
Sizekhaya Holdings has promised to put empowerment at the center, ensure operational excellence, and bring in modern systems that increase both access and accountability.
For Tembe, this is more than a business opportunity. It’s a chance to rebuild trust in public institutions — and to prove that, yes, the lottery really can be for the people.
The South African National Lottery is entering a bold new phase. With Moses Tembe leading the charge, and a powerhouse team backing him, the goal is clear: restore the lottery’s soul and make it truly work for the nation.
Whether you play or not, every ticket has the potential to change lives far beyond the jackpot.
Ready to believe in the Lotto again?
Let’s hold the new operators accountable, support local initiatives funded by the lottery, and keep an eye on how this reboot unfolds. After all, the lottery is ours — and it should work for us all.
