The Verdict is In: MTN Named Mpumalanga’s Top Mobile Voice Network

For residents of Mpumalanga, the age-old debate of which mobile network provides the best call quality now has a data-driven answer. In the most comprehensive independent test of its kind in South Africa, MTN has been crowned the province’s voice network champion.

The results come from MyBroadband Insights’ massive 2025 mobile voice testing project, which put the networks of Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C, and Rain through their paces across the country, including key areas in Mpumalanga.

How the Great Network Test Was Conducted

This wasn’t a casual experiment. Partnering with Keysight distributor Coral-i, the project used world-leading Nemo network testing technologythe same system used by major global operators and regulators.

Between May and July 2025, the testers covered over 10,000 kilometres on South African roads, including major highways and routes through Mpumalanga. They made a staggering 34,000 calls, recording more than 566 hours of call data.

The setup was incredibly thorough. Using a fleet of high-end Android smartphones running custom firmware, they tracked crucial performance indicators like:

  • Call Setup Success Ratio (CSSR): How often your call actually connects.

  • Dropped Call Ratio (DCR): How often your call gets cut off.

  • Call Setup Time (CST): How long it takes for the call to connect.

  • Speech Quality (MOS): The clarity of the call once you’re connected.

The Mpumalanga Ranking: Who Came Out on Top?

When all the data from the province was collated, a clear hierarchy emerged:

1. MTN
MTN took the top spot by achieving the lowest dropped call rate and the highest call setup success rate in the province. For users, this means fewer frustrating failed calls and more reliable connections.

2. Vodacom
Coming in a strong second, Vodacom clinched victories in other key areas. It achieved the highest average voice quality (clarity) and the lowest average call setup time, meaning your calls connect faster and sound crystal clear.

3. Telkom & 4. Rain
The two providers found themselves in a tight race for third and fourth place, with their performance metrics being very close.

5. Cell C
Unfortunately, Cell C trailed significantly behind the other networks in the Mpumalanga region, performing “much worse” according to the report’s findings.

For Mpumalanga residents and businesses, this data provides a valuable evidence-based guide. It cuts through the marketing hype and shows which network is most likely to keep you connected clearly and reliably across the province’s diverse terrain.
