Trucks bring N3 to a standstill near Harrismith

Traffic chaos hits one of SA’s busiest routes

If you were planning a road trip between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, you may want to think twice or at least pack extra patience.

A major disruption on the N3 near Harrismith has brought traffic to a grinding halt, with trucks blocking both directions and leaving motorists stranded for hours.

The closure, reported near the 42nd Hill area close to the Harrismith North Interchange, has effectively frozen movement along one of South Africa’s most critical transport corridors.

“All traffic is stacked”

According to the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the situation escalated quickly, with multiple trucks obstructing the route.

The result? A complete standstill.

Motorists heading toward both Gauteng and KZN found themselves stuck in long queues, with little to no movement. Authorities have urged road users to delay travel until further notice advice many wish they had received earlier.

A familiar story for N3 travellers

For regular N3 users, this kind of disruption feels all too familiar. The route stretching roughly 415km between Heidelberg and Cedara is one of the busiest freight and passenger corridors on the continent.

Nearly half of the vehicles on this road are trucks, a reality that keeps goods moving across provinces but also increases the risk of major delays when things go wrong.

And when they do, they tend to go very wrong.

Easter traffic hangover

This latest incident comes on the heels of the Easter long weekend, a period known for heavy traffic volumes across South Africa.

From church pilgrimages to family getaways, the N3 becomes a lifeline connecting inland provinces to the coast. This year was no different, with a noticeable spike in vehicles and pressure on an already strained route.

For many drivers, the congestion didn’t end with the holiday.

Social media frustration spills over

Unsurprisingly, frustrated motorists took to social media, sharing videos of endless lines of trucks and stationary cars baking under the autumn sun.

Some users joked about “setting up camp” on the highway, while others vented about missed meetings, delayed deliveries, and the lack of real-time updates.

One driver described the experience as “watching time stand still literally.”

Not an isolated incident

Just a day earlier, another truck-related accident caused chaos on the N3 closer to Johannesburg.

An overturned truck at the Gillooly’s Interchange forced authorities to close a key ramp, diverting traffic and adding nearly an hour to some commutes. Cleanup operations took time, and for many, the delay was enough to turn them back home altogether.

The bigger picture: a road under pressure

There’s a broader issue at play here.

South Africa’s reliance on road freight especially along the N3 means that any disruption has a ripple effect. From supermarket shelves to fuel deliveries, delays on this route don’t just inconvenience drivers; they impact the economy.

Add ageing infrastructure, high traffic volumes, and peak holiday pressure into the mix, and incidents like this become less surprising and more concerning.

What motorists should know

For now, authorities are urging caution and patience. If you’re travelling between Gauteng and KZN:

  • Delay non-essential trips
  • Check traffic updates before leaving
  • Consider alternative routes where possible

Because on the N3, when things stop they really stop.
