Robert Mugabe’s Son Faces Additional Charges After Alexandra Court Appearance

The legal troubles facing Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe have deepened this week after prosecutors added two more charges to the case against the 29 year old.

Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, briefly appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday alongside his co accused, Tobias Matonhodze, who is 33. The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that the pair now face additional counts as the investigation continues to unfold.

The case has drawn attention in Johannesburg due to the high profile family name involved and the seriousness of the allegations connected to an incident in Hyde Park.

New Charges Added

According to the NPA, Mugabe and Matonhodze are now facing charges of pointing a firearm and contravening the Immigration Act.

These new allegations come on top of the original charges already brought against them. The two men were initially accused of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The charges stem from a shooting incident involving a 23 year old man believed to have been working as a gardener at a residence linked to the Mugabe family in the upmarket suburb of Hyde Park, north of Johannesburg.

Hyde Park, known for its luxury homes and close proximity to Sandton, rarely finds itself in the spotlight for violent incidents, which has made the case particularly notable in local circles.

Case Postponed For Further Proceedings

The matter has been postponed until Thursday, 5 March, when the case is expected to return to court.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the delay will allow prosecutors to provide further documentation to the defence team.

“The postponement is to allow the state to provide the defence with confirmatory documentary evidence from the Department of Home Affairs and to enable the defence to obtain further instructions from the accused,” Mohlatlole explained.

The additional documents are expected to play a role in clarifying aspects of the immigration related charge now included in the case.

Investigation Continues

While the court appearance itself was brief, the case is still developing as investigators continue gathering evidence connected to the Hyde Park shooting.

With new charges already added and further documentation still being compiled, the upcoming court date could provide more clarity on how the prosecution intends to proceed.

For now, Mugabe and his co accused remain at the centre of a case that has attracted attention both in Johannesburg and beyond, given the political legacy attached to the Mugabe name.
