SAPS Appeals for Help After Driftsands ShootingWarns Against AI-Generated Misinformation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has reiterated its appeal for public assistance in identifying a person of interest following a fatal shooting in Driftsands, Mfuleni, on 21 February 2026.

The Crime

Provincial Serious and Violent Crime detectives are investigating a murder and attempted murder after two friends were ambushed while waiting for food at a shop on the corner of Duif and Langeni streets.

“Three armed suspects exited a faded silver-brown Datsun seven-seater and opened fire.”

One victim was shot multiple times and later died in hospital. The other survived after being shot in the legs and assaulted.

The Investigation

Surveillance footage from the scene is central to the investigation.

A male captured in the video is considered a “person of interest” who may assist police with their inquiries.

SAPS stressed that this does not mean the individual is a suspectrather, someone who could provide crucial information.

The AI Problem

The clarification comes amid public concern following reports that an AI-generated or misidentified image circulated on social media falsely linking a local teenager to the crime.

The false connection sparked fear and distress for the family.

The Appeal

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone who can identify the person of interest or has information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS App.

The Bottom Line

A young man is dead. Another is wounded. A person of interest is being sought. And a teenager and his family are dealing with the fallout of misinformation.

SAPS is clear: help identify the person in the footage. But don’t let AI-generated falsehoods add to the tragedy.
