Johannesburg residents are being urged to brace for planned power interruptions over the next month as City Power Johannesburg conducts maintenance across several substations. City Power warned that these outages are part of routine repairs and could be prolonged if weather conditions interfere with restoration efforts.
The first planned interruption hits Alexandra on Wednesday, 25 February, from 9am to 5pm, affecting:
West Bank
Far East Bank Ext. 9 and 10
Lombardy East, 1st to 8th Avenue (between Hoffmeyer and Rooth Street)
On Thursday, 26 February, the Lunar Substation will be offline from 9am to 5pm, impacting:
Univille
Lawley
Finetown
Mountain View
Ennerdale Ext. 8
Lenasia South
The Siermert substation is scheduled for maintenance on Sunday, 1 March, from 8am to 4pm, affecting:
Berea
Troyeville
Jeppestown
Fairview
Highlands
Doornfontein and New Doornfontein
Johannesburg CBD
Residents in select areas should expect interruptions early next week. On Tuesday, 3 March, the Commercial Switching Station will be offline from 9am to 5pm, impacting parts of the Vodacom area.
On Thursday, 5 March, the Star Point Switching Station will be affected during the same hours, with outages reported in:
Indianapolis Street
Kyalami Boulevard
Brand Hatch Close
Monza Close
Entrance Court
Shopping Centre
Riviera residents face a temporary outage at the Cydna Substation on Saturday, 7 March, from 8am to 4pm. The Mondeor Substation will also undergo maintenance on Sunday, 8 March, affecting Mondeor, Mondeor Ext. 3–5, Meredale, Naturena, Kibler Park, and Alan Manor.
Further planned outages are scheduled in mid-March:
Tuesday, 10 March – Hursthill Substation (Westdene, 1st to 4th Avenue including Thornton Road) and Noordwyk Switching Station (Protea Avenue, Alwyn Avenue, Deodar Avenue, part of 8th Road, Westbrook Estate), 9am to 5pm.
Sunday, 22 March – UNISA Switching Station, 8am to 4pm.
Monday, 23 March – First Avenue Switching Station, Roodepoort North, 8am to 4pm.
City Power reminded Johannesburg residents that the electricity system is currently constrained and urged users to reduce consumption where possible. While these planned outages are part of maintenance, conserving electricity can prevent additional strain and unplanned blackouts.
For now, load-shedding has been postponed until further notice, but City Power stressed that residents should remain vigilant and plan around the scheduled interruptions.
Tip for residents: Stock up on essentials, charge devices in advance, and avoid scheduling high-energy tasks during planned outage windows. Social media and local news outlets are expected to provide real-time updates if conditions worsen due to weather or technical delays.
