Joburg water warns of major outages across city next week

Johannesburg residents are bracing for a week of water disruptions as Joburg Water presses ahead with critical infrastructure upgrades designed to improve service delivery and water supply reliability. The utility has announced planned maintenance affecting thousands across five regions between 9 and 12 March 2026.

Officials say the works are essential to ensure the city’s water systems are more resilient in the long term, though residents will face low pressure or complete outages during the scheduled periods. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and where.

Seven-day maintenance hits Kensington and surrounding areas

Region F will bear the brunt of the longest shutdown, as Joburg Water undertakes preparatory and structural works at a major reservoir. The seven-day interruption runs from 7am on 9 March to 3pm on 15 March, affecting:

  • Kensington and Kensington South

  • Denver

  • Malvern East and Malvern

  • Cleveland

  • Jeppestown

  • George Goch

The utility said this “dummy run” period will allow teams to test systems ahead of structural repairs inside the reservoir. Customers will be supplied via a bypass pipeline, but residents are urged to report any anomalies during the process.

Randpark Ridge faces eight-hour shutdown

On 10 March, Randpark Ridge Extension 74 will see an 8-hour water outage from 8am to 4pm. The disruption is limited to Benguela Avenue and is required to connect a new pipe to the existing network.

Joburg Water confirmed there will be no water supply during the work, and alternative supply points will be advised closer to the date.

Alexandra, Linbro Park and nearby areas face 18-hour blackout

Region E residents will experience the most extensive single-day disruption, starting 6am until 11:59pm on 10 March, affecting:

  • Linbro Park and Lakeside

  • Alexandra and Marlboro

  • Eastgate and Buccleuch

The outage is part of the broader “tie-in” of a new water pipe to the mainline. Joburg Water warned that households should prepare for a full day without water, with details on temporary supply points to follow.

Stretford Extension 4: low pressure or no water

Residents in Stretford Extension 4, Region G, will face water interruptions on 10 March from 8am to 5pm due to the relocation of a water reticulation pipeline. The impact may vary, with some areas experiencing low pressure and others losing water entirely.

Major north Joburg shutdown on 12 March

The largest single maintenance project is set for Region A in northern Johannesburg on 12 March, from 9am to 9pm. Suburbs affected include:

  • Carlswald, Erands, Summerset, Noordwyk, Sagewood Extensions 18–24

  • Crowthorne, Kyalami AH, Gardens, Estates, Ridge, Heights, Hills

  • Barbeque Downs, Vorna Valley, Jukskei View south of N1, Blue Hills Extensions 8 and 9

Joburg Water attributed the disruption to infrastructure upgrades along Walton Road and the Erand Tower tie-in. Alternative water supply points have been provided, including Spars in Noordwyk, Crowthorne, Barbeque Downs, and at Kyalami Prep School, among others.

What residents need to know

Across all regions, Joburg Water emphasised that these outages are necessary to improve service delivery and ensure continuity of supply. Residents are advised to stock up on water, plan ahead, and keep an eye on updates for temporary supply points.

While the outages will be inconvenient, city officials say these projects are part of a long-term strategy to reduce unexpected disruptions in the future. Social media reactions have already shown concern, particularly among residents of Alexandra and Kensington, where daily routines may be disrupted for nearly a week.

By completing these upgrades, Joburg Water hopes to prevent future bursts, low-pressure events, and emergency shutdowns a small sacrifice for long-term water security in South Africa’s largest city.
