KZN horror crash: 11 killed in Isipingo taxi and truck collision
A devastating morning on the R102
Thursday morning began like any other for commuters travelling along the R102 near Lotus Park in Isipingo. Within moments, it turned into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s deadliest road tragedies in recent weeks.
A collision involving a minibus taxi and a truck has claimed the lives of 11 people, with emergency services still working through the wreckage hours later. The crash happened south of Durban, an area known for heavy morning traffic as residents make their way to work, school and transport hubs.
Emergency crews face a grim scene
ALS Paramedics were among the first responders on scene. According to spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the situation quickly escalated due to the scale of the impact and the number of people involved. Additional ambulances were dispatched to assist as the extent of the fatalities became clear.
Jamieson described the scene as extremely distressing, warning that the road would remain closed for an extended period while rescue operations and investigations continue. Motorists were urged to avoid the area entirely, with significant traffic disruptions expected throughout the day.
A familiar and painful reality for KZN roads
Serious crashes involving taxis remain a painful and recurring issue on KwaZulu-Natal roads. The R102, which runs parallel to the N2, is often used as an alternative route by taxis and trucks, particularly during peak hours. Community members have long raised concerns about congestion, speeding and vehicle safety along this stretch.
While investigations into the exact cause of Thursday’s crash are still underway, the loss of life has once again sparked conversations around road safety, enforcement and the risks faced by everyday commuters who rely on public transport.
Shock and sorrow ripple through the community
News of the rising death toll spread rapidly across social media, with messages of shock, grief and frustration pouring in from across Durban and beyond. Many locals expressed heartbreak for the families waiting for answers, while others called for urgent action to prevent similar tragedies.
As emergency crews remain on site and authorities work to piece together what happened, the focus remains on the victims and their loved ones. This is still a developing story, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
