A North West ANC councillor and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) is facing a slew of serious charges after a dramatic arrest in Klerksdorp on Saturday morning. Wesley Kgang, the MMC for Local Economic Development in the City of Matlosana municipality, was arrested and charged with drunken driving, assault, crimen injuria, malicious damage to property, and resisting arrest.

The incident, captured in videos circulating on social media, shows Kgang involved in a physical struggle with traffic officers as they attempted to place him in a police vehicle. According to North West police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, the confrontation began around 6:30 am when traffic officers spotted a black sedan driving against oncoming traffic in Leask Street.

Confrontation and Escalation

A female traffic official approached the vehicle and suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol. When she informed Kgang of his arrest, he allegedly became aggressive and attacked the female officer. Male colleagues intervened, leading to an escalated struggle where Kgang resisted arrest.

The female officer sustained an injury to her left hand during the altercation.

Damage and Detainment

The confrontation continued en route to a health facility for a mandatory blood sample. Kgang allegedly hit and broke the window of the traffic vehicle. He was eventually taken to the Stilfontein Health Centre and later to the Stilfontein Police Station, where the blood sample was finally drawn.

Kgang remains in detention and is scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face the full list of charges. The case places a glaring spotlight on the conduct of a public representative, compounding legal consequences with a severe reputational crisis for both the individual and the party he represents.
