‘Don’t Be Fooled’: NPA Warns of Impersonators Posing as Top Prosecutor Andy Mothibi
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has issued a stern warning: fraudsters are impersonating the country’s top prosecutor.
According to NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, individuals are using fraudulent phone numbers and social media accounts to pose as National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) advocate Andy Mothibi.
The Scam
Impersonators have been circulating messages falsely claiming to be Mothibi.
In some cases, they are using a photo of him taken with Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson to lend credibility and mislead recipients.
The Warning
“The NPA strongly condemns these acts of impersonation and urges the public to exercise caution when receiving messages or calls from anyone claiming to be advocate Mothibi,” Kganyago said.
The NPA stressed that the NDPP does not communicate with the public through private or unfamiliar numbers regarding official matters.
The Crime
Such conduct is unlawful and could constitute offences including fraud and impersonation.
The NPA has called on those responsible to immediately cease impersonating Mothibi and misusing his image.
What to Do
Members of the public who encounter suspicious messages or calls claiming to be from Mothibi are urged:
-
Not to engage
-
Report the incidents to their nearest law enforcement authorities
The Bottom Line
The NPA is committed to protecting the integrity of its leadership and safeguarding the public from fraudulent activities conducted in the name of its officials.
If someone claiming to be Andy Mothibi contacts you out of the blue, it’s not him. It’s a scam. Don’t engagereport it.
