Two separate rescue operations along the scenic coastline of Plettenberg Bay this week have once again highlighted both the beauty and unpredictability of South Africa’s popular hiking spots.

The National Sea Rescue Institute stepped in on consecutive days to assist two women who were injured while exploring coastal trails, bringing both situations to a safe conclusion.

A Challenging Rescue At Robberg Nature Reserve

The first call came in on Monday afternoon at Robberg Nature Reserve, one of the Garden Route’s most iconic hiking destinations.

A 62-year-old tourist from Taiwan had been walking the trail with her husband when she was injured near an area known as The Gap. With sea conditions too rough for a boat-based rescue, crews had no choice but to tackle the terrain on foot.

Rescuers, joined by a ranger from CapeNature, hiked in to reach the patient. After stabilising her on-site, they carefully carried her back along the trail to the parking area.

From there, the couple made their way to hospital, with the woman later transferred to a facility in Knysna for further care. Despite the ordeal, she is expected to recover fully.

Second Incident At Keurbooms Beach

Less than 24 hours later, another callout came through, this time at Keurbooms Beach.

A 68-year-old woman from Langebaan had been walking with her husband near Cathedral Rock during low tide when conditions shifted. A sudden set of incoming waves caused her to sustain an injury in the rocky coastal area.

NSRI teams responded quickly, reaching the scene and providing immediate medical care before carrying her off the beach to safety. She was then transported to hospital, where she remains under medical supervision.

While her injuries are more serious and may require ongoing treatment, she too is expected to make a full recovery.

Why Coastal Trails Can Catch You Off Guard

For many South Africans and international visitors, Plettenberg Bay’s coastline is synonymous with relaxed holidays and postcard views. But as these incidents show, even well-known routes can present real risks.

Changing tides, unpredictable waves and uneven terrain are all part of the coastal hiking experience, particularly in areas like Robberg and Keurbooms. What starts as a leisurely walk can quickly turn into a situation that requires emergency assistance.

The NSRI’s swift response in both cases speaks to the importance of having trained rescue teams along South Africa’s coastline, especially in high-traffic tourist regions.

A Reminder For Outdoor Enthusiasts

As the Easter travel season continues to draw visitors outdoors, these back-to-back rescues serve as a timely reminder to plan ahead before heading out on coastal trails.

Checking tide times, wearing appropriate footwear and staying aware of changing conditions can make all the difference between a memorable outing and a dangerous situation.

In both cases this week, quick action and coordinated rescue efforts ensured that what could have been far worse ended with both women on the road to recovery.
