‘Like a Movie Scene’: Suspect Shot Dead After Holding Officers Hostage at KZN Police Station

A suspect arrested for attempted murder was shot dead after he allegedly held two police officers hostage and attempted to kill them at a police station in KwaZulu-Natal.

The dramatic incident unfolded at the Ntuzuma police station on Monday morning, 16 March 2026.

The Arrest

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday.

On Monday, two police officers were charging him in the cells when he overpowered them and started assaulting them.

The Hostage Situation

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda described the scene.

“After taking the keys of the main door from the officers, police managed to call for backup, and when uniformed police officers came to their rescue, the suspect grabbed the firearm from one of them and started shooting as he locked them inside the cells.”

“Police tactically took cover as the suspect continued firing shots.”

The Outcome

The hostage situation continued for several minutes before tactical police teams managed to penetrate the cells.

“During the operation, the 22-year-old suspect was shot and fatally wounded.”

Two police officersa male and a femalesustained minor injuries during the scuffle.

Both will be temporarily withdrawn from active operations to undergo psychological debriefing.

Investigations are continuing.

Western Cape Shooting

Meanwhile, two people have been shot and killed in the Western Cape.

The shooting occurred on Buttercup Street, Kalksteenfontein, Bishop Lavis, at about 6:15 am on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk said Bishop Lavis police registered two counts of murder.

Both menaged 18 and 22sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.

According to reports, three unidentified males walked up to them, randomly fired several shots, and fled the scene.

The Bottom Line

In Ntuzuma, a suspect who should have been safely in custody turned a police station into a battlefield.

In Bishop Lavis, two young men were gunned down in the street.

Two communities. Two tragedies. One common thread: violence that never seems to end.
