A woman and her lover have been handed life sentences for plotting and hiring a hitman to kill her husbanda traffic officer seen as an “obstacle to their relationship.”

Nokuzola Nxilolo and Mzamo Ciko were found guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The Victim

Sindezama Nxilolo, 51, was a traffic officer at the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

In 2017, his wife and her lover conspired to have him killed.

The Plot

The pair hired a hitman, Lungile Ntungwana, from Cape Town.

On the night of the incident, Ciko took the hitman to the victim’s home, where Ntungwana shot the victim seven times at close range before fleeing.

The Investigation

Ntungwana was arrested that same year and convicted. He was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment and later turned state’s witness against Nxilolo and Ciko.

Nxilolo and Ciko were tracked to Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in 2022 and arrested.

The Sentence

The pair was sentenced on two counts:

  • Conspiracy to commit murder: Five years’ imprisonment

  • Murder: Life imprisonment

The Praise

Acting Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Colonel Zingisa Manqoyi, praised the investigation team:

  • Captain Modise (retired)

  • Warrant Officer Thembekile Mlindazwe

  • Warrant Officer Sinethemba Mtshawu

  • Sergeant Buyelwa Tindleni

Their “tireless efforts and coordination ensured a breakthrough in the case.”

The Bottom Line

A husband, a traffic officer, was seen as an obstacle. So his wife and her lover hired a hitman.

Seven bullets later, he was dead. And now, they will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

Justice, delayed but delivered.
