Not guilty of good taste: Purple jacket helps convict Park Rynie armed robbers

Two men who carried out a brazen Park Rynie armed robbery in July 2023 have been sentenced to 12 years in prison, thanks in part to one suspect’s poor fashion choice.

The Scottburgh Magistrates Court handed down the sentence on August 7 to Mzukisi Sikweletsi (20) and Fano Ngqangqa (35). The pair were convicted of storming a business in the Industrial Park, tying up victims, and stealing cash and cellphones.

Purple jacket mistake

While Sikweletsi dressed in dark clothing, Ngqangqa wore a bright purple camouflage jacket and a red beanie. The unusual outfit left a lasting impression on victims, who gave detailed descriptions to police.

“This specific item of clothing became a crucial piece of evidence. It’s not something you see every day,” said a source close to the case.

Police investigation

Detective Constable Werner Botha of the Scottburgh Detective Service led the investigation. Using the distinctive description, police tracked down and arrested the suspects in October 2023, three months after the crime.

After nearly two years of trial proceedings, both men were found guilty of business robbery. They were also declared unfit to ever possess a firearm.

Warning to criminals

Law enforcement welcomed the conviction as a strong win against violent crime.

“The excellent description provided by the victims, combined with diligent police work, ensured these dangerous individuals were taken off our streets. It shows how small details can make a big difference,” the source said.
