Six Injured in Pinetown Cash-In-Transit Robbery as Gunmen Open Fire
Violence Erupts on Shepstone Road
Pinetown residents were left reeling Thursday evening as a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist erupted into chaos on Shepstone Road near Hendred Road. Six people, including a police officer, were injured when armed robbers opened fire not only on the cash van but also at passing motorists.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson described the scene as chaotic and widespread. “The crime scene covered approximately 300 metres,” he said. “There was heavy gunfire during the attack, and paramedics had to wait for the police to secure the area before attending to the injured.”
Casualties and Response
One victim, a male passenger in a vehicle, sustained two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and was in critical condition. Emergency crews stabilised him at the scene before rushing him to hospital for urgent care.
Four others, including two security officials, suffered less severe injuries and were treated on site before being transported for further medical attention.
“This incident was terrifying for bystanders and motorists,” Jamieson said, noting the paramedics’ coordinated effort with Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) to manage the unfolding crisis.
A Wave of Robberies Hits KwaZulu-Natal
Thursday’s incident marks the fourth CIT robbery in the province in recent weeks, highlighting a disturbing trend in KwaZulu-Natal.
-
On December 5, a security officer was injured in a CIT heist on the M35 near Umlazi.
-
A few days later, another robbery occurred along the R617 near the P27-1 Pevensey turn-off.
-
On November 19, a brazen attack outside Midway Mall in Newlands West left a security guard shot and wounded.
Residents and social media users have expressed frustration over the apparent spike in violent CIT robberies, calling for increased police visibility and tougher security measures on major routes.
Community on Edge
The Pinetown robbery has left locals on edge, particularly after repeated attacks in the area. Many are calling for stricter policing and preventive measures to protect both security personnel and ordinary motorists.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been approached for comment. Meanwhile, emergency responders continue to urge caution, reminding motorists and residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
A Growing Concern
With CIT robberies increasingly turning violent, experts warn that both the public and security officers face growing risks. Thursday’s attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by armed robberies on South Africa’s roads and the urgent need for preventative interventions.
