Pretoria Family Seeks Justice After Double Hit-and-Run Kills Motorcyclist

The family of Tyrone Dercksen, a 29-year-old from Pretoria West, is searching for answers after he was killed in an alleged double hit-and-run before being robbed of his belongings.

Fatal Crash on Hendriks Street

According to his cousin, Barend Enslin, the incident happened last Thursday night. Dercksen was riding along Hendriks Street towards Bohlman Street when a vehicle allegedly pulled out and struck him on the right-hand side.

“The impact caused him to crash. From what we can tell, one vehicle drove over him, and possibly a second hit him or the motorcycle. Both fled the scene,” Enslin explained.

Paramedics later declared him dead at the scene after bystanders phoned for help.

Family Pleads for Information

Enslin says the family is desperate for closure.

“We are looking for anyone with information or who witnessed anything. This was a hit-and-run, twice. We need to know which vehicles were on that road around 9pm, because the ones that hit him must have damage.”

A case of culpable homicide has been opened. The family hopes CCTV footage may help identify the perpetrators.

Robbed While Dying

Adding to the family’s pain, Dercksen was reportedly robbed by homeless individuals living under a nearby bridge. They allegedly stole his phone and wallet while he lay fatally injured.

He leaves behind two young sons and his parents.

Community Anger Over Dark Streets

Family member Ronel van Dyk said the crash site was pitch dark, with no working streetlights.

Ward councillor Leon Kruyshaar condemned both the hit-and-run drivers and the city’s failure to maintain lighting.

“How can someone drive away from an accident scene? It’s irresponsible and against the law. Our community is shocked, especially since two other fatal accidents have happened on Hendriks Street in the last three months,” he said.

Kruyshaar added that non-functioning streetlights remain a major safety hazard, blaming recent municipal budget cuts that removed funds earmarked for fixing lighting infrastructure.

Call for Justice

Dercksen would have turned 30 this year. His family says they will not rest until those responsible are held accountable.
